In 1983, after may years of neighborhood deterioration and industrial encroachment, residents of the St.Vincent’s neighborhood of South Boston came together to take action. They incorporated South Boston Community Housing, Inc. to revitalize the West Second Street corridor and to address the increasing need for affordable housing.
South Boston Community Housing completed the Monsignor Lyons Homes, 10 affordable condominiums, in 1989. These homes were constructed on vacant and blighted lots donated by the City of Boston.
Since 1989, the organization has developed over 130 units of affordable housing. South Boston Community Housing changed its name to South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation in 1998 to better reflect the corporation’s neighborhood revitalization activities. In addition to affordable housing development, SBNDC has provided technical assistance and lending referrals to small businesses.
