Community Investment Tax Credit Program

CITC graphic 1k.jpg

When you make a donation over $1,000 to South Boston Neighborhood Development, Massachusetts will refund half of your entire donation back to you!

Through the Community Investment Tax Credit (CITC) program, donations of $1,000 or more are eligible for a 50% state tax credit. Unlike many tax credit programs, CITC is very simple and all donors are eligible!

How does it work?

  1. Let’s say you make a generous donation of $1,000 to SBNDC

  2. You complete a simple online form and the state issues you a tax credit certification number

  3. When you file your state income taxes, enter your certification number and receive a refund for 50% of your donation. That’s $500 back in your pocket!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does CITC double my impact?

Through the CITC program, half of your donated amount is refunded back to you, putting 50% of your donation back in your pocket. But SBNDC receives the full amount of your donation. The impact of your donation is double the dollar amount you actually give! The CITC program makes it possible for many donors to give twice as much as they normally could, because they know they’ll receive 50% back at tax time. Even though you get half of your donation back, SBNDC receives the full donation amount and you will have made a significant contribution to affordable housing and quality of life programming in South Boston.

What if I do owe on my Massachusetts state taxes?

If you owe on your Mass. income taxes, your refund will reduce your tax bill. Whatever is left over is refunded back to you in cash, as part of your tax refund.

What if I do not owe a Massachusetts tax obligation?

If you don’t owe any Mass. income taxes, your full CITC refund (50% of your original donation amount), is added to your other total tax refund.

I made multiple donations this year. Are they eligible for CITC?

If your combined donations in a year total to $1,000 or more, you are eligible for CITC.

For example, if you give $250 at Taste of South Boston, another $250 at the Street Festival, and then donate $500 on Giving Tuesday, your total giving for the year is $1,000 and you are eligible to receive a $500 refund through the CITC program.

Is my Sponsorship CITC eligible?

Sponsorships are eligible for CITC as long as they meet the $1,000 minimum. However, the value of Chamber dues, complimentary tickets, or other goods and services the sponsor received in exchange for a sponsorship must be deducted from the donation amount.

To find out if your sponsorship is CITC eligible, please call South Boston NDC at 617-268-9610.

I utilized CITC in the past. Can I participate again?

Yes, you can participate in the CITC program if your combined donations to South Boston NDC total at least $1,000 in a calendar year. The process of receiving tax credits is even easier if you have already participated in the program.

I am an individual, is my donation eligible for a refund?

Yes! All Massachusetts taxpayers who make a gift of $1,000 or more, including individuals and families, are eligible to receive a refund for 50% of their donation when they file Massachusetts state income taxes.

You must complete a short online form to receive your tax credit certification number, which you will enter when filing your state taxes to apply the refund.

I did not claim tax credits for my past donation. Is it too late?

You may still be able to claim tax credits on donations made in a prior year. To find out if your previous donations are eligible, please call South Boston NDC at 617-268-9610.

My donation is CITC eligible and I want to claim a refund. What do I do?

South Boston NDC will send eligible donors information about how to utilize CITC throughout the year. You do not have to wait until you receive a letter to start the process, and tax credits claimed earlier in the year help South Boston NDC to budget and plan more accurately.

To proactively begin the CITC process, call us at 617-268-9610.
