Quality of Life

It takes more than affordable homes to create communities where people of all ages can live, learn, and grow.

Affordably priced, stable housing is foundational to South Boston NDC’s mission, but we also strive to support residents in other meaningful ways. South Boston NDC supports residents’ quality of life across three core service areas:

  • Asset Building

In addition to ensuring residents are not rent-burdened, South Boston NDC connects tenants with cost-saving programs to help lower utility bills and provides access to fresh, nutritious food at low costs through the South Boston Farmers Market.

  • Youth Development

Seasonal and year-round positions are filled by local youth who work with South Boston NDC to help maintain our community gardens, run the Farmers Market, and plant and maintain street trees and flower beds along West Broadway.

  • Community Engagement

An engaged, diverse membership comprised of neighborhood residents is the foundation of our engagement activities, which involves educating community members on the development process and how to effectively advocate for more community benefits and affordability, and ways to prepare for and mitigate the effects of a changing climate.

South Boston
Farmers Market

In 2015, South Boston NDC assumed management of the South Boston Farmers Market. The market operates from noon to 6 p.m. on Mondays from June to October, providing fresh produce, breads, eggs, and more for local shoppers, with monthly events featuring live music and specialty vendors. The South Boston Farmers Market accepts SNAP/EBT and the City’s Healthy Incentives Program, which provides free, fresh produce to low-income shoppers.

Southie Trees & Community Gardens

Southie Trees is dedicated to educating the public about the relationship between urban trees and the quality of the environment and health of the community. Trees decrease the heat island effect and mitigate air pollution, yet South Boston has among the lowest tree cover of all city neighborhoods. The program also employs local youth each summer to plant flowers around the trees on West Broadway and has expanded to include the management of two neighborhood community vegetable gardens.

Climate Action Partners

In 2019, South Boston NDC launched the Climate Action Partners initiative and became the coordinating agency for a variety of climate change-related projects throughout the community, including waste-reduction efforts and educational programs for youth about the causes and local impacts of the changing climate. South Boston NDC is working with several local nonprofits to achieve specific climate action commitments, as well as continuing public education and outreach campaigns through the Farmers Market and summer youth programs.
